Sanghaseva
Retreats combining Dharma and Service
The Woza Moya Project was initiated in 2000 by Thanissara, Kittissaro, Sue Hedden and the Buddhist Retreat Centre, in response to the HIV/Aids crisis in South Africa. It is situated in the rolling hills of rural KwaZulu Natal, an area of both great poverty and great beauty where the HIV/Aids infection rate is nearly 40% and many people of the local Chibini community are dying, particularly parents leaving vulnerable children. Its mission is to provide care for those affected by the pandemic, primarily focussing on home-based care, orphan intervention and food security, and also to promote awareness and education around HIV/Aids.
Our work with the Woza Moya Project will focus on creating 'door gardens' in individual homesteads in the valley, a demo veggie garden on the Woza Moya site, and visits with the Woza Moya Community Care workers to families impacted by the HIV/Aids pandemic. The first two weeks we will be staying at the Buddhist Retreat Centre and working in the project in the rural Zulu community within which the Woza Moya Project operates. Each day will be framed with meditations and time to process and discuss our experience.
The work weeks will be facilitated by Thanissara with members of Sanghaseva and the South African Sangha. There will be a weekend retreat between the work weeks faclitated by Kittisaro and Thanissaro.
The last week at Dharmagiri Hermitage will be a time of retreat, contemplative mountain walking and integrating the experience of the previous few weeks. This week will be faciltated by Thanissara and Kittisaro.
The cost (not including air fare) will be approx. R 3,500 (At present this would be around £250 - £300. Please note the Rand exchange might vary.) There may be some financial support available for those who are not able to meet the full cost of the retreat or air fare.
