Work Retreats

For those wishing to undertake a retreat, which emphasises the integration of meditation with daily life, Gaia House offers the option of work retreats. The work directly contributes to the well being of everyone at Gaia House and helps to keep the daily rates as low as possible.

Gaia House has 5 work retreat places, which are available from a minimum of 2 weeks to a maximum of 3 months. Before coming on a work retreat, it is essential to have previously completed at least one week-long teacher-led Insight Meditation/Vipassana retreat in silence (not necessarily at Gaia House). Work retreats often involve work that is strenuous and demanding, consequently prospective work retreatants need to be physically fit, with the capacity to live and work in silence (with instruction from managers). A work retreat consists of five hours of physical work and 4 periods of meditation a day. One day a week is set aside as a retreat day. If staying longer than one month, work retreatants have an additional two retreat days for each month completed. During group retreats, work retreatants can participate in the group schedule as their work allows. Work retreatants attend a facilitated weekly group meeting with the Resident Teacher as well as meeting individually with teachers.
